The Brief

The Crowne Plaza Mawson Lakes required a large-scale shading solution for the building’s internal atrium roof. The glazed atrium spans the full length of the building’s central space, flooding the interior with natural light – but without adequate shading, the space was subject to significant heat gain and glare. The brief called for a solution that could cover the entire atrium roof, integrate cleanly with the existing glazing structure, and be operated remotely.

The Details

The Veranda V Zip system was selected for this landmark commercial installation, providing a continuous motorised shade system across the full expanse of the Crowne Plaza atrium roof. Installed in a light diffusing fabric, the system filters the harsh South Australian sun while preserving the bright, open character of the atrium interior – allowing natural light to wash through the space without the heat and glare that would otherwise make it unusable.

From the rooftop, the scale of the installation is striking – panel after panel of the Veranda V Zip system running the full length of the building, sitting neatly within the glazed roof structure. From inside, the effect is seamless: a softly lit atrium with living green walls, event spaces, and hotel corridors all benefiting from the controlled environment the shading system creates.

This is one of the most ambitious commercial installations Global Blinds has completed, demonstrating the capability of the Veranda V Zip system at the highest level of commercial specification.

Installation

The scale of this project required a crane to lift the Veranda V Zip panels to rooftop level, with installation teams working across the full length of the atrium glazing from above. Each panel was carefully positioned and secured within the roof structure before the motorised drive system was connected and commissioned. Precise coordination was required across the full run to ensure consistent tensioning and alignment of the zip edges throughout.
