The Brief
The Hyatt Event Centres existing blind system failed to keep out the heavy rain, or let in the sunshine. They needed a fail-safe rain proof roof, with the added benefit of being able to see the sky, and control the angle of the sun.
The Details
The Hyatt Place Event Centre presented an interesting and challenging pergola roof project. This was due partly to size, and partly due to the new system being installed the over the top of an existing blind system. The SB500 Pergola system solved all of the Hyatt’s issues with the current blinds, being lack of light and failing to keep out heavy rain.
The Pergola system bolted together perfectly to form a giant remote controlled roofing system. It provides exceptional protection from rain, and also allows the roof to be opened to the fresh air and sunshine as weather permits.
Installation
The pergola arrived in two shipping containers and after a massive unpacking job construction commenced.
The SB500 Pergola was attached to the concrete wall at one end. The feet were inserted through the roof and onto the existing steel beams. Eight motors were required to drive the opening and closing of the blades; all using Somfy equipment.
Due to the size of the area we developed a larger than standard guttering system. This enabled the roof to catch more than twice the rain recorded during the worst storm for 100 years. The gutter was constructed in stainless steel to provide easy care and durability. Gutters were carefully cut and wrapped around the posts to enable rain to pour out of the end and onto the existing roof.
The electrical wiring required for each motor was cleverly concealed inside the beams, thereby enabling access to the receivers at any time.
Overall the project was installed with little to no issues. This was largely due to the detailed project planning from the beginning, plus onsite management to co-ordinate both equipment and personnel. These included a forklift, two scissor lifts, a giant scaffold system, eight tradesman, four plumbers, three skips bins of rubbish, an electrician & a project manager.
